    d'echange.

    The Chinese “Bi”

The “bi” is a disk of variable size with a hole in its middle; it symbolizes Heaven or the “Supreme Power”. Depending on the proportion between the central opening and the width of the disk, its name can vary:

“bi “ when the central diameter is  equal or inferior to half of this width, “huan” when both dimensions  are rather equal and “yuan” when the disk is reduced to  a narrow ring. Originally without any decoration, the “bi” adorns itself with in relief decorative details at the end of the Zhou dynasty (11th to 3rd century BC). It therefore also had a ritual function.

On the other hand “bi” also means coin; it is the same character as in “renminbi”, the Chinese currency used today. These “bi” seem to therefore also have been an exchange currency.
